Ten days before the Voice of America, the American government's direct radio and tv broadcast service transmitted to Europe, Micahel Rubens Bloomberg was born on the 14th February 1942 in Boston (Massachusetts). He is the eldest of two children. His father William Henry Bloomberg and his mother Charlotte Cloomberg (née Rubens) were both children of Jewish imigrant from Russian backgrounds. When he was two years old his parents relocated to Brookline in Massachusetts and remained their for two years. In 1946, the Bloomberg family settled in Medford in Boston's suburbs. After an excellent scholarly life he enrolled in John Hopkins University where he became a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. Born into a middle-class family, he paid his school fees with a student loan and working as a parking attendant. In 1964, he graduated in electrical engineering at university. Some time later, he got his MBA at Harvard.
In 1966, Michael is hired by Saloman Brother, a famous investment bank on Wall Street. He leads equity trading, then becomes responsible for systems development. This experience allows him to find his place in the world of business but also to understand the importance of Communications.
In 1975 he married Susan Brown. They would have two girls after their marriage, Emma in 1979 and Georgina in 1983.
In 1981 Saloman Brother merged with Phibro Corporation and Michael Bloomberg had to be let go. He received a severance pay of $10 million with which he created the Innovative Marketing Systems Society, which specialises in financial services.
In 1982, Meryll Lynch, a major American investment banker became the first client of Innovative Marketing System. Meryll Lynch donated 44 payment terminals and invested $30 million.
In 1986 Michael Bloomberg (or Mike to his friends) renamed the company Bloomberg LP. The society then became a specialist financial group.
In 1987, Bloomberg LP owned 5000 payment terminals. Gradually the progression of its development, the society created auxilary products such as Bloomberg Tradebook (offering trading services), Bloomberg Messaging Service (a chat service) and a press agency.
In several years Michael Bloomberg became one of America's richest men.
Strong from his success, Michael Bloomberg wanted to explore new avenues. He entrusted the management of Bloomberg LP to Lex Fenwick, to concentrate on his political career. He then decided to run in New York's election for mayor under the leadership of the Republican Party, which came as a shock became he had been a Democrat. He chose this way in order to by-pass the Democratic Primaries. He invested $70 million of his own money during the campaign.
In November 2001 he was elected Mayor of New York with 50% of the vote against 48% for the Democrat candidate Mark Green. The new mayor had to face an enormous issue during his first term of office: the aftermath of September 11th 2001. He had to manage the reconstruction of the World Trade Centre Towers as well as the protests in the city against the Iraq War at the U.N Headquarters. In 2004, New York was the host city of the National Republican Party Convention. Michael Bloomberg remained Conservative on tax but liberal and economic on society issues such as gay marriage and gun control.
In 2005 Michael Bloomberg ran for a second term of office, he was supported by The New York Times a right-wing based newspaper and by several local electives of the Democrat Party. In November 8th 2005, he promised to reduce New York's CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030. He also launched an energy renovation campaign of buildings, as part of New York's « go green » campaign (with the plantation of a million trees) and hoped to install a toll for vehicles entering Manhattan. In 2008, Bloomberg LP changed to PDG; Lex Fenwick was replaced by Dan Doctoroff, one of Bloomberg's former assistants at New York's City Hall. The society grew an enormous amount and now employed more than 10,000 people in 130 countries.
On October 2nd 2008, he announced he would run for a 3rd term of office.
Michael Bloomberg has been the most experimental candidate during a time of financial crisis and to ask New Yorkers to trust him one more time. He wants to establish a reform on education and fighting poverty. This time, he appears on the list of the Independence Party of New York. However since 1993, a Mayor of New York can only serve two terms. Bloomberg also called for a law allowing three terms. The law was voted in favour with 29 against 22 votes by New York City Council. Bloomberg won the election with 50.6% of votes to Bill Thomson's 46%- the Democrat candidate.
In March 2010, a source close to Michael Bloomberg claimed he could be running in the 2012 election, proving that nothing seems to stop this American billionaire.
